I’m an overwhelmed new blogger. Even as I write this post I’m hearing a voice inside my head saying ‘You know nothing about blogging! What are you doing writing a blogging advice post?’
And the voice is right, to an extent- but you know something? I know a hell of a lot more than I did when I first started out.
I also know that I wanted to give up so many times- after looking at all the beautiful professional blogs out there it was so hard not to get discouraged. Sometimes I actually did give up- but a few days later I’d be back to it again. I just couldn’t give up on something which gives me so much joy- even though it’s frustrating!
And you know what? I’m still not there. I *know* there are things on AdventureBird that would make a pro blogger do an eye roll. I’m a perfectionist, so at first this was hard for me, but I’m forcing myself to accept the fact that it’s OK. I’m learning. The important part is having fun, and we all have to start somewhere!
With that in mind, I wanted to cut through all the technical stuff and write a post to help new bloggers out there like me enjoy blogging without the frustration. Don’t worry about SEO or Google Analytics or whether or not you have an Instagram theme (seriously ain’t nobody got time for that!), Here’s what you really need to know:
Blogging is fun!
This would seem obvious, but I’ve been guilty of forgetting this at times. Try your best not to worry about numbers. Just focus on having fun and creating great content, and the rest will flow!
There’s going to be lots of technical stuff
But the great news is you don’t have to engage will all of it. For the stuff you do decide to engage with, see number 3…
Take it one step at a time
The technical stuff especially takes time to master, but you’ll be amazed how much you can accomplish when you learn a little bit each day (the technical blogging guides are your friend here). For example you guys- I just learned what a Favicon is. Someone high five me!
You’re gonna make mistakes (most likely with the techy stuff…)
I wish blogging was like drag, and you got some kind of awesome drag momma a-la Ru Paul’s Drag Race to teach you the blogging etiquette- but the reality is there’s going to be a lot of trial and error. It’s OK to make mistakes, which brings me on to number 5…
Don’t be a perfectionist
This is probably the hardest thing to push through when it comes to blogging. Initially there will probably be a gap between your creative vision and the reality you create. The difference is skill, and skills can only be practiced by putting your work out there, so give yourself the freedom to be less than perfect.
